How do I get my iPod Touch out of recovery mode with out losing my data?

I was trying to update my iPod and the update wouldn't take. Now it is stuck in recovery mode. It says if I restore the iPod I will lose my data. Is there a way to get it out of the recovery mode without losing any data? The screen has iTunes symbol and as USB cord.
