What is a longitudinal data set and how does it differ from other ways of data gathering?

I want to know the differences between different methods of gathering data. The UK Dept. of Work and Pensions has been moving its data reporting system to a longitudinal system and I was hoping to discover what the advantages of and alternatives to this are.

Thanks. What is a longitudinal data set and how does it differ from other ways of data gathering?
