My internet provider claims that the data transmission from internet traffic, puts such a strain on the copper wires, that all their clients have to pay a fee for ';copper wear-down';. I don't mind the fee (it's very small), but i'm curious about, how the data signal affects the copper wire?

I think they mean the wire has to be replaced after so many years, due to corrosion or insulation breakdown, and they are making you pay for it.
